A study just published indicated that the link between eating fruits and vegetables and preventing cancer is not as strong as previously thought. However in an effort to keep everyone focused on the fact that fruits and vegetables are still your best bet to keeping healthy and in turn reducing your chances of diseases like cancer we would like to point out how they work against certain cancers.

Prostate Cancer - Studies have shown that men who had more than 2-3 servings per week of tomato products (i.e. tomato juice, tomato sauce, ketchup, etc) decreased their chances of developing prostate cancer. Tomatoes are well known to have large amounts of Lycopene which is an antioxidant that gives tomatoes their red color. In addition, it is well documented that Lycopene is also a compound that helps prevent many types of cancers, prostate cancer being one of them.

Colon Cancer - Folic Acid (or folate) has been strongly linked to a reduction in your chances of developing colon cancer. Studies have shown that taking at least 475mcg (micrograms) of Folic Acid every day can greatly reduce your chances developing this deadly cancer which takes the life of over 650,000 people worldwide every year . Now, you can obtain the needed amount from a multi-vitamin if you wish however there are many natural sources at your local grocery store or farmers market that will provide the same amount or more of folic acid and that taste much better. Some of these sources include oranges, beans, spinach, beets, strawberries and asparagus. By just including a few of these into your daily diet you can help yourself avoid one of the world's most deadliest cancers.

Bladder Cancer - Studies have shown that certain cruciferous vegetables have been linked to a reduction in your chances of developing bladder cancer. The two vegetables that stand out are broccoli and cabbage and the study has indicated that eating these vegetables in just small amounts can reduce your chances of developing bladder cancer by as much as 40%! Now that is getting a lot of bang for your vegetable buck!

There are many other examples of where increased consumption of fruits and vegetables was directly related to a reduction in the chances of developing other cancers. No matter what this new study tells you it is widely known that eating healthy and exercising are the only two things people will agree upon that help you live a long and healthy life. So keep eating those fruits and vegetables, become healthier and eat your broccoli as it may just keep cancer out of your life!
